Similarity –

  • Outlander tells the love story of Claire Randall in 1940s England and Jamie Fraser of 1730s Scotland. It commences in post-Second World War (England) and goes way back to 18th century in Scotland. Game of Thrones is seemingly stimulated by the War of the Roses which goes way back in the 15th century. Other than their historical factors, both feature fantastical factor as well.
  • Outlander and Game of Thrones both shows ruthless violence and the explicit sex. It resembles the game of thrones 9 on the scale of 10, perhaps we can say it’s the Scotland version of GOT!

Difference –

  • Unlike Game of thrones, Outlander has pretty satisfactory ending according to the subscribers.

Similarity-

  • The battles in Barbarians series are full many beheadings, immolations, whippings, crucifixions and axe fights. It shows a great deal of fighting, sending chills-down-your-spine kind of violence which is similar and even above the scale of violence shown in Game of thrones.

Marco Polo also has some of the exceptional fighting scenes and sequences. Marco Polo gives same dark feel and vibes as GOT perhaps due the factors of time period and the war are much similar among them.

Difference-

  • GOT has a massive cast and most of them can die, Marco Polo has much smaller cast that doesn’t die as series go on. GOT is fantasy, where Marco Polo is based on historical events.

8. The Borgias (2011, 3 seasons.)

Release date, cast and plot-

Similarity-

  • The Borgias is an extraordinary series. I feel it’s more similar to shows like Vikings and Rome. If you are into watching some great historical TV shows like Vikings, The Borgias should be on the top of your watch list! Also Game of thrones and The Borgias, both series rely on complex political storylines and same theme.

7. Spartacus (2010, 3 seasons + prequel mini-series.)

Release date, cast and plot-

  • Spartacus is an American television series produced in New Zealand that premiered on Starz on January 22, 2010, and concluded on April 12, 2013. The fiction series was inspired by the historical figure of Spartacus, a Thracian gladiator who from 73 to 71 BC led a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic departing from Capua. Executive producers Steven S. DeKnight and Robert Tapert focused on structuring the events of Spartacus’ obscure early life leading up to the beginning of historical records. The story begins with an unnamed Thracian’s involvement in a unit of Roman auxiliary in a campaign against the Getae in the Lower Danube under the command of the legatus, Claudius Glaber. It features Andy Whitfield (season 1 and prequel) and Liam McIntyre (seasons 2–3) as Spartacus – a Thracian slave who becomes a gladiator in the ludus of Lentulus Batiatus before leading a slave uprising.

Similarity-

  • Spartacus and Game of Thrones both are historical shows, though Game of Throne’s world is set in a fantasy medieval time while Spartacus is set in ancient Rome but both societies are seemed as patriarchal. Both GOT and Spartacus have remarkable cast, romantic scenes, nudity, heavy violence and explicit sex.

Difference-

  • Still Game of Thrones actually is a more complex story having more depth than Spartacus. GOT has huge impact on viewers’ imaginations, on the other hand Spartacus has less impact as compared to GOT in spite of its terrific production.

They receive help from a young doctor named Victor Frankenstein, who is hunted by an undead man of Frankenstein’s creation.

Similarity-

  • The blood-soaked action sequences in Penny dreadful can be compared to the action sequences including fighting, beheadings, wars and manslaughter in both the series ; GOT and Vikings, If the idea of a lot of blood shed doesn’t startles you, then you should definitely go for this series!

Release date, cast and plot-

  • Rome is a historical drama television series created by John Milius, William J. MacDonald, and Bruno Heller. The show, consisting of two seasons for a total of 22 episodes, aired on HBO, and BBC Two from 28 August 2005 to 25 March 2007, and was later released on DVD and Blu-ray. The series primarily chronicles the lives and deeds of the rich, powerful, and historically significant, but it also focuses on the lives, fortunes, families, and acquaintances of two common men: Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo, fictionalized versions of a pair of Roman soldiers mentioned in Caesar‘s Commentarii de Bello Gallico. It casts Kevin McKidd as Lucius Vorenus – A staunch, traditional Roman officer who struggles to balance his personal beliefs, his duty to his superiors, and the needs of his family and friends. The basis for this character is the historical Roman soldier of the same name.

Similarity-

  • Vikings series has different outlooks and viewpoints to process and consider while watching it. Similarly, Rome has the same effect on the viewers which is more narrative-driven and has a lot stored in for the viewer to take in.  Rome series is full of wild and event-filled eras. It describes the decadence of the Roman Empire as well balanced using the exquisite, gorgeous and magnificent depiction of the prehistoric kingdom. Considerably like Vikings, Rome grooms in on a few important figures – Julius Caesar and Pompey Magnus struggling to gain power, leading them to clash each other.

The third and the fourth seasons focus on the war for the control of New Providence between the pirates and the British Empire, represented by Captain Woodes Rogers.

Similarity-

  • Both Game of Thrones and Black sails show has emphasized on its violence and extreme brutality, from 18th Century pirates, which doesn’t seem to end soon. “It’s all about the details of the characters,” Hakeem (Mr. Scott – a former slave and now Eleanor’s right hand man). He desires that the viewers should look past to the never ending and heavy violence along with explicit sex. Like Game of Thrones, Black sail’s detailing that has gone into the work makes it more fascinating and interesting television show to watch.

The Dragon Reborn is prophesied to either save the world from a primordial evil known as the Dark One, or break it once more casting Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred, an Aes Sedai who is searching for the Dragon Reborn , Daniel Henney as al’Lan Mandragoran, Moiraine’s Warder and companion Zoë Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara Wisdom of Emond’s Field.

Similarity-

  • Rand’s character in the wheel of time is quite similar to the character of Jon Snow in game of thrones as rand is the most important and powerful character, because Rand is the Dragon Reborn, who either saves the world or destroys it. Along with that, he realizes he is not the son of his father. On the other hand, Jon snow deeply feels the responsibility and burden of being his father’s bastard son. It is revealed that he is Aegon Targaryen making him the hire to the throne.

2. The Witcher (2019, 3 seasons.)

Release date, cast and plot-

  • The Witcher is a Polish-American fantasy drama television series created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich for the streaming service Netflix, based on the book series of the same name by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. Set on a fictional, medieval-inspired landmass known as “the Continent”, The Witcher explores the legend of Geralt of Rivia and Princess Ciri, who are linked to each other by destiny.[9] It stars Henry CavillFreya Allan, and Anya Chalotra. The first season consisted of eight episodes and was released on Netflix in its entirety on December 20, 2019. It was based on The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, which are collections of short stories that precede the main Witcher saga. The story begins with Geralt of Rivia, Crown Princess Ciri of Cintra, and the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg at different points of time, exploring formative events that shape their characters throughout the first season, before eventually merging into a single timeline. Geralt and Ciri are linked by destiny since before she was born when he unknowingly demanded her as a reward for his services by invoking “the Law of Surprise”. After the two finally meet, Geralt becomes the princess’s protector and must help her and fight against her various pursuers to prevent her Elder Blood and powerful magic from being used for malevolent purposes and keep Ciri and their world safe.

Similarity

  • Both The Witcher and game of thrones shows have an awfully dark tone and vibes. The another similarity between the two shows is the upcoming apocalyptic event – The white walkers and the country’s forthcoming magical doom. Geralt’s tale in The Witcher, like Jon Snow’s, Tyrion Lannister’s, and other Game of Thrones characters, involves one striking similar factor – discrimination. They all are despised for who they are, Geralt – a monster hunter ( aka Witcher ), Jon Snow – a bastard and Tyrion Lannister – a dwarf, and there are signs of them being traumatized while they were young. Another evident contrast can be found in the Arya Stark’s character in GOT and Princess Ciri’s character in the Witcher.

The historical setting, war factor, brotherhood, manipulation and forest scenes of both the shows make them visually very similar.

  1. The last kingdom (2015, 5 seasons.)

Release date , cast and plot-

  • The Last Kingdom is a British historical fiction television series based on Bernard Cornwell‘s The Saxon Stories series of novels. The series was developed for television by Stephen Butchard, premiering on the 10 October 2015 on the BBC. In 2018 the show was acquired by Netflix.[1] The series lasted for a total of five seasons, with the final season airing on 9 March 2022. A feature-length sequel, titled Seven Kings Must Die, has been filmed for Netflix.  The first series roughly covers the events of The Last Kingdom and The Pale Horseman, the first and second novels in Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories, however they are condensed for the screen. In the year 866, the Great Heathen Army‘s arrival in Britain is about to redefine the relationship between Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. Following the establishment of Danish rule in Jórvík and East Anglia, the show largely focuses on the resistance of the Kingdom of Wessex to ongoing Viking incursions to Southern England.
  • The first season covers the years 866–78. The main protagonist (named Osbert in childhood) is re-baptized as Uhtred after his elder brother Uhtred is killed by the Danes; his father, along with other Saxon noblemen of Northumbria, are killed in battle against the Danes casting Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred of Bebbanburg.

Similarity-

  • Both shows have two important characters in common. On the Saxon side, there’s King Alfred the Great, a real-life English king who successfully defended against several Viking attacks. On The Last Kingdom, he’s played by David Dawson. On Vikings, he’s been played by several actors, but is currently played by Ferdia Walsh-Peelo.
  • Then Viking warlord Ubba, played by Rune Temte on The Last Kingdom and Jordan Patrick Smith on Vikings.
  • Vikings and The Last Kingdom on Netflix cover a lot of the same ground: they’re both set around during the same time period and deal with the same subject matter, sharing a few of the same characters.

Difference-

  • However, both of the shows use the same characters in a very different manner. Ubba, from The Last Kingdom is a brutal raider but On Vikings, his name is changed a tad bit to “Ubbe” and he’s portrayed as a thoughtful hero because The Last Kingdom focuses on the Saxon side of this story.
  • Vikings plays at faster pace with history as compared to The Last Kingdom.
